Biology Students Dive into Coastal Fieldwork

Rocky Shores Depth Study Brings Biology to Life

Year 11 Biology students recently took part in the Rocky Shores Depth Study, an immersive field experience that supports key Stage 6 curriculum outcomes in ecology and environmental science.

The day began with a visit to the fossilised forest at Dudley Beach, where students explored ancient plant remains and considered the evolutionary changes that have shaped life over millions of years. This sparked meaningful reflection on biodiversity and the long-term impacts of environmental change.

At Merewether Beach, students applied scientific inquiry methods by laying transects and collecting data using quadrats across the rocky shore platform. This hands-on investigation allowed students to examine species distribution, ecosystem interactions, and human impacts on coastal environments - aligning closely with outcomes related to fieldwork skills, data analysis and the application of ecological principles.

Engaging with real-world environments outside the classroom fosters a deeper understanding of scientific concepts and strengthens student confidence in scientific thinking, investigation, and analysis.
