Performing Arts

Music at St Philips Christian College is of upmost importance with all students Prep-8 engaged in mandatory Music and as well as Elective Music in Year 9-12, offering Music 1, Music 2 and Extension. Corresponding with the curricular music program, SPCC Cessnock has a diverse range of co-curriculuar music opportunities for students to be a part of.

SPCC Cessnock has a developing College Band and VOX Vocal Ensemble that rehearse weekly. Both groups have an open invitation and seek to provide an environment where students are able to have fun and engage in music outside the classroom. Co-curricular music students have had the opportunity to perform at College and community events such as the College ‘Spring Fair’, ‘CAPA Piartsa Night’ and ‘Winter Serenade’. Ensemble students also participate in music with other students across the Hunter Valley at the annual HRIS Cultural Festival. Students find these ensembles and performance opportunities to develop both their skills and confidence.

SPCC Cessnock offers students with the opportunity to be involved an annual production, alternating between Middle School and Senior School. Students embark on the audition process, rehearsals and performance as they are encouraged to develop their skills and passions. Students may participate as performers, technicians, costume designers, choreographers, or musicians. Past Productions have included; ‘Stir Wars’ written by our very own Mr. Andy Hall, The Importance of being Ernest, Barefoot in the Park, and Fantastic Mr. Fox.

Over 100 students receive private music tuition at SPCC. The school employs excellent instrumental and vocal teachers from across the Hunter Valley. Students having private lessons at school are strongly encouraged to participate in the school’s large ensemble co-curricular program, both Band and the VOX Vocal Ensemble.
