Sport

Sport at St Philip’s Christian College Cessnock is continuing to grow through our house sports as well as opportunities to represent our College in various competitions from Principal’s Cup sporting competition through to Hunter Region Independent Schools events.

Our house sporting competitions are led by our secondary and primary house captains and played throughout the year during lunch times. This is a great chance for students to play various sports for their house and gain points to build for the house spirit cup.

Our sporting representative pathway is through Hunter Region Independent Schools (HRIS). Our Secondary sporting pathway moves onto Association of Independent Co-educational Schools (AICES) then onto Combined Independent School (CIS) and finishing with NSW All Schools and Nationals. Our Primary pathway goes from HRIS to Combined Independent School (CIS), then NSW PSSA and onto Nationals.

Over the past few years we have seen representatives at NSW PSSA (Primary), All Schools (Secondary) and Nationals in Athletics and Cross Country as well as CIS players in Rugby League, Rugby Union and Swimming. In addition to fantastic student athletes we have teachers who are involved in high level sports coaching at NSW level in Football (Soccer), Rugby League, Basketball and Australian Rules Football. There are lots of opportunities for our students to receive high level coaching and compete in numerous sports.

As part of giving our students a wide range of opportunities to participate in a number of different sports we have a Year 7 to Year 10 Sporting elective afternoon. Students can be a part of numerous sports from soccer, cricket, netball and touch football to gymnastics, dancing and water polo. We have loads of different sporting opportunities for our students to select for elective sport.

Our facilities, just like our sporting opportunities continue to grow highlighted by the start of our new sports centre that will take our sporting program to another level. It is exciting to have our first indoor sporting facility underway that will feature indoor sprung basketball courts, a gym room, dance studio and break out rooms that will give our students and athletes a whole new sporting experience. With sports specific skill development and individualised training programs each student athlete has the opportunity to reach their full sporting potential.

Additionally, the development of our sporting fields has seen our athletics track host both secondary and primary athletics carnivals in 2017. With the development of community relationships, St Philip’s rugby oval is home of the Pokolbin Rugby Club and with our soccer oval and further development of our cricket and Australian Rules oval coming soon our College can host any sport. Over the next few years we will see state of the art facilities and the development of elite sports training and programs. St Philip’s Christian College Cessnock will be the leader in sport in our region.
