At Young Parents College (YPC), education is about far more than textbooks and timetables. It’s about hope, restoration, and walking alongside young people as they build brighter futures for themselves and their children. Few people embody this vision as clearly as Jessica Cowin, Head of Campus.
With a deep commitment to equity, compassion, and belief in the potential of every young person, Jessica leads YPC with grace, purpose, and unwavering care for students and staff alike.
A Calling to Purpose-Driven Education
Jessica was drawn to Young Parents College by a conviction that education should be accessible to everyone, particularly young people who have been underserved or overlooked by traditional schooling systems.
“I believe every young person is created with worth, purpose, and potential, regardless of their circumstances,” she says.
For Jessica, YPC is more than a school, it is a place where faith is lived out through compassion, grace, and high expectations. She was inspired by the opportunity to support young people showing extraordinary courage as they navigate both parenthood and education, often in the face of significant adversity.
Walking alongside students as they rebuild confidence, rediscover their identity, and work toward hopeful futures aligns deeply with her values and sense of calling.
Strength, Resilience, and the Power of Showing Up
One of the biggest surprises for Jessica when she first joined YPC was the depth and complexity of hardship many students have experienced simply trying to access education. Their stories are a powerful reminder of the barriers young parents often face.
Yet equally striking is the resilience of the YPC community.
“Despite what they carry, our students bring honesty, humour, and empathy into the space,” she reflects.
This perseverance reinforces the importance of creating a learning environment grounded in grace, safety, and hope, one that recognises restoration is always possible.
A Holistic Approach to Leadership and Learning
Jessica brings a unique blend of professional training and lived experience to her role. With a background in psychology, counselling, and primary teaching, she understands both how trauma and instability impact learning, and how to rebuild confidence and foundational skills for students who may have disengaged early from education.
Her experience in leadership and ministry has also shaped an approach that balances structure with grace, relationships with accountability, and high expectations with compassion.
At YPC, education is never one-size-fits-all. Instead, learning is personalised, achievable, and meaningful, meeting each student where they are.
Supporting Young Parents Through Real-World Challenges
Teaching young parents comes with unique challenges. Disrupted schooling, educational gaps, parenting responsibilities, health concerns, and housing instability can all impact attendance and engagement. Jessica is clear, however, that these challenges are not a lack of commitment, but evidence of young people carrying adult responsibilities far too early.
The response at YPC is intentional and collective.
“We build a village of support around each young person,” Jessica explains.
This includes partnerships with mental health services, housing and parenting support, local churches and community organisations, family members, and trusted friends, alongside consistent, relational support from YPC staff.
The belief is simple but powerful: no one is meant to walk alone.
Moments of Transformation
While graduation days are always deeply moving, often with children cheering their parents on, Jessica says her proudest moments are often the quiet ones.
Small shifts in confidence. A change in mindset. A student learning to speak kindly about themselves or naming strengths they never believed they had.
“When a young person begins to see themselves differently, it reflects real transformation.”
These moments capture the heart of YPC: lives being restored and futures rewritten.
Lessons from the Students
Jessica says the students themselves are her greatest teachers. They remind her that resilience is often quiet, showing up on hard days, choosing to try again, and taking one step forward even when the road feels overwhelming.
They have also reinforced the importance of humility, safety, trust, and unconditional positive regard.
“Growth happens when someone feels genuinely seen, known, and valued.”
Building Trust Where Trust Was Once Broken
Many YPC students arrive with difficult school experiences behind them. For Jessica, trust is built through consistency, honesty, and follow-through.
By being predictable, respectful, and clear, while extending grace when things don’t go to plan, students begin to feel safe again. A strengths-based approach helps young people see themselves not through the lens of past mistakes, but through who they are becoming.
Redefining Success
At Young Parents College, success looks different for every student. Academic outcomes matter, but they are only part of the picture.
Progress in confidence, independence, attendance, parenting skills, and help-seeking behaviours are all celebrated. Every step toward stability and hope is significant.
“Success isn’t just about outcomes. It’s about growth, perseverance, and restored belief in the future.”
Words of Hope When Things Get Hard
When a student feels like giving up, Jessica’s message is simple but powerful:
“Just do the next right thing. You’re not alone, and this season doesn’t define your whole story.”
It’s a reminder rooted in hope, perseverance, and grace, for students and for staff alike.
A Community of Hope
When asked to describe Young Parents College in three words, Jessica doesn’t hesitate:
Hope-filled. Transformative. Compassionate.
She also wishes more people understood the bravery of young parents who choose education while raising children, often in the face of stigma and judgement. Their commitment to creating better futures for their families is inspiring, sacrificial, and deeply courageous.
Advice for New Staff
For those beginning their journey at YPC, Jessica offers this advice:
“Come with humility, compassion, and a willingness to learn. Trust the power of relationships, lean into community, and remember that the work you do here matters deeply.”
At Young Parents College, that belief is lived out every day, and under Jessica Cowin’s leadership, it continues to grow.
