At Young Parents College (YPC), every staff member plays a vital role in creating a supportive, flexible, and empowering environment for young parents. Today, we’re shining a light on Bridget Brown, one of our incredible Learning & Wellbeing Assistants, whose passion and dedication make a real difference in the lives of our students.
From Reception to Wellbeing: A Journey of Purpose
Bridget’s journey at YPC began in 2020 when she joined as an Administration and Reception Assistant, back when YPC was known as Young Parents Hub. During that time, she worked closely with students and community support services, witnessing firsthand the impact of a nurturing environment.
“Seeing how much difference genuine support can make inspired me to become more directly involved in students’ learning and wellbeing,” Bridget shares. After returning from maternity leave, she stepped into a Wellbeing role—a move that felt like a natural and meaningful next step.
“As a mum myself, I understood the pressures of parenting and juggling so much. That experience fuelled my passion to work in a place where I could help create a safe space for young parents to feel heard, valued, and empowered.”
What Makes YPC Unique
When Bridget first started, she was amazed that a school like YPC even existed. “It’s such a unique place. The way it supports students through a dual-generational approach is incredible,” she says.
She’s continually inspired by the resilience of YPC students: “They juggle so much, yet they show up with their kids, determined to create a better future. Their stories are powerful—they haven’t always been dealt the best cards, but they’re unbelievably resourceful and strong.”
Training and Experience
Bridget’s two years in administration gave her valuable insight into students’ needs. She also completed a Certificate III in Community Services, alongside professional development in Mental Health First Aid and Accidental Counsellor training. “These experiences helped me connect students with the right resources and support them effectively,” she explains.
“I wish more people understood the dedication young parents have. With the right support, they can achieve remarkable things.”

Challenges and Triumphs
Supporting young parents comes with unique challenges, like fluctuating attendance due to family responsibilities. Bridget says flexibility is key: “We offer wellbeing check-ins for students who can’t make it to campus, so they still feel connected.”
Her proudest moments? “Formal night and Presentation Day. Seeing students graduate with their children beside them is pure joy. I also love when students advocate for YPC at open days—it’s amazing to see them speak confidently after overcoming anxiety.”
Lessons Learned
Bridget learns from students every day: “They remind me to be grateful and show me how capable young people truly are.”
Building trust is central to her role: “I listen. When students feel genuinely heard, trust grows.”
What She Loves Most
“I love organising activities and excursions that help students connect and feel uplifted. It’s rewarding to see how much these experiences mean to them—and how they often inspire similar activities with their kids.”
Words of Encouragement
When a student feels like giving up, Bridget reminds them:
“Look how far you’ve come. You can absolutely do this!”
Her advice to new staff? “Be flexible and open-minded. Every student has a unique story. Be prepared to fall in love with their little families—they’ll feel like part of your own.”
Three words to describe YPC?
Supportive. Flexible. Community.
Bridget sums it up perfectly: “I wish more people understood the dedication young parents have. With the right support, they can achieve remarkable things.”
