Sally’s Story

Walking Alongside Young Parents at YPC

When Sally Shields first stepped through the doors of Young Parents College (YPC), she knew she was walking into something special. It wasn’t just the teaching that drew her in — it was the opportunity to connect with young parents and be part of their journey.

“I was so inspired by the students,” Sally recalls. “I felt blessed to be part of their story.”

More Than Just Teaching

Sally didn’t come to YPC to simply teach subjects and mark assessments. For her, education is about supporting the whole person — guiding students not only academically, but emotionally and personally as well.

“Our students face incredible challenges,” she says. “Yet their resilience amazes me every day. They’re constantly pushing forward, determined to create better lives for themselves and their children.”

Sally quickly realised that flexibility was key. At YPC, learning isn’t confined to a rigid structure — instead, the environment adapts to meet each student's needs.

“I was so impressed by how the school embraces that flexibility,” she explains. “It allows students to engage at their own pace and still feel supported.”

Equipped to Support

With over 20 years of teaching experience, Sally brought a wealth of knowledge with her — particularly in Student Wellbeing and Child Protection. These skills became invaluable as she navigated the unique challenges faced by young parents balancing school, family, and life’s unexpected hurdles.

“Attendance can be difficult at times,” Sally admits. “Our students juggle so much — parenting, appointments, and life’s demands. That’s why we offer flexible study days, recovery opportunities, and individual adjustments to make it possible for every student to succeed.”

Moments That Matter

For Sally, the most rewarding moments come when she sees her students achieve something they once thought was impossible.

“Graduation and Presentation Day are so special,” she says. “Watching students celebrate their success — seeing them realise how far they’ve come — it’s incredible.”

But it’s not just the big milestones that matter.

“Sometimes the most powerful moments are quieter,” Sally reflects. “When a student completes their first assessment, grasps a difficult concept, or takes a step toward a better future — those are the moments that remind me why I’m here.”

Learning from Her Students

Working at YPC has changed Sally’s perspective in unexpected ways.

“I’ve learned that young people are far more capable than they’re often given credit for,” she says. “I’ve seen real transformation — moments where you know God is working miracles in their lives.”

Building trust has been a key part of that journey.

“For many students, past school experiences haven’t been positive,” she explains. “Building trust takes time — it’s about meeting them where they’re at, investing in conversations, and showing that we genuinely care.”

Words of Encouragement

When students feel overwhelmed, Sally reminds them to focus on the bigger picture. “I ask them to imagine their future — what life might look like a year from now, or five or fifteen years down the track,” she says. “I remind them they’ve already overcome tough situations before — and they’ll get through this too.”

Most importantly, she reassures them they’re not alone. “We’re walking beside them every step of the way.”

A Community Like No Other

If Sally had to describe YPC in three words, she’d choose: Community, Flexible, Individual. “It’s such a unique place,” she says. “I just wish more people knew how strong and determined our young parents are. They face stigma, yet their courage deserves so much admiration.”

Advice for New Staff

For those just beginning their journey at YPC, Sally offers this advice: “Be ready to shift your perspective. While there are still lessons to plan, marking to do, and assessments to manage — the heart of the role is walking alongside these remarkable young mums and dads as they build the lives they dream of.”

Because at YPC, education isn’t just about knowledge — it’s about hope, resilience, and the power of a community that believes in you.
