Last Friday, members of our St Philip’s leadership community gathered for a special Prayer Morning, dedicating our new Wilderness Centre Tharreo. Gathered in Swan Bay, we took time to pray, gather, and worship.
The morning began in the Retreat Centre with an opening prayer from our Executive Principal of Dynamic Learning Michelle Cairelli, and a chance to connect. Our CEO Graeme Irwin also introduced the significance of the site. Our Leader of Adventure Education and Saints Academy Paul Wellham led us in worship.
The name Tharreo (Greek: θαρρέω, tharreó) is a rich and meaningful word used in the New Testament, often translated as “to be courageous,” “to be confident,” or “to take heart.” It appears in several key passages where Jesus or the apostles encourage believers to stand firm in faith, despite challenges or fears.
One of the most well-known uses is in John 16:33, where Jesus says: “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart (tharreo); I have overcome the world.”
We affirm our desire for students and staff to experience more than just physical adventure. We envision a place where young people are shaped spiritually, where they are called to deeper faith, challenged to grow in character, and equipped to face life with courage founded in Christ.
Our small group was then led on our prayer walk around the property. Thank you to our Director of Spiritual Formation Matthew Stackhouse for leading us over this time. Everyone was encouraged to explore the property and take time with God to be thankful, and to wish guidance for the many students, staff and guests that will come through Tharreo in future.
The morning concluded with an optional opportunity for further site exploration, allowing attendees to continue engaging with the space.
This Prayer Morning marked a significant and faith-filled step forward, grounding the future of this new venture in prayer and a shared vision.
