Research Project - Collaborative Proactive Solutions (CPS) Model
DALE (Dynamic Alternative Learning Environment) and DALE Young Parents are a part of St Philip's Christian College, which provides an alternative education environment to students diagnosed with mental health disorders, and to young parents wanting to continue their education. Research has shown that students with mental health disorders including social, emotional, and behavioural difficulties disproportionately disengage from learning.
We plan to implement Dr Ross Greene’s Collaborative and Proactive Solutions (CPS) model across all of our campuses. Teachers will all be trained to identify the lagging skills that students present with, which lead to challenging behaviour. In collaboration with students, teachers will purposefully work to help solve unsolved problems and equip students with the skills they need to succeed in unfamiliar or difficult situations. Throughout the study we will measure students’ engagement with the Motivation and Engagement Scale (MES).
Our goal is to determine whether implementing CPS in our learning environment will promote engaged learners. If CPS is effective in the promotion of student engagement within the DALE context, then using CPS in a mainstream education environment will have a significant positive effect on disengaged students, not only those with mental health disorders, but for those students at risk, to increase their likelihood of engagement with education.
