The industry comprises motor vehicle manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers, parts suppliers and mechanics that design, research, develop, manufacture, sell and maintain motor vehicles and parts.

This qualification reflects the role of individuals who perform a range of tasks relating to identifying and inspecting mechanical and electrical components and systems of light vehicles, heavy vehicles, outdoor power equipment, bicycles, marine craft and motorcycles. This qualification also covers the skills and knowledge required to perform minor maintenance and repair of an automotive vehicle body. The competencies are relevant for work entry programmes.
