Debating ChampionsTuesday 22nd September 2009 On Tuesday, 8th September St. Philips Christian College Gosford sent two teams of debaters to the UNSW Junior School Debating day.
Our students did extremely well. Our Stage 3 (Years 5 - 6) team consisted of Natasha Sneddon, Lucy Field and Emma Hassall and was undefeated throughout the day. Our second team for Stage 4 (Years 7 - 8) performed very well also and included: Steven Benbrook, Emma Giaquinto, Mikala Tunstall and Jane Lee. It narrowly lost the final in a hotly contested debate.
The President of the UNSW Debating Society said of them: “Congratulations indeed on the performance of your teams! They did very well, and one [achieved] a team prize.”
The event was specifically targeted at students in late primary and early high school (years 5-8). A total of 52 teams of debaters competed from all different schools across Sydney.
The day featured three rounds of debates and a comprehensive workshop. The format of the whole day encouraged debaters to identify the ways they could improve individually and as a team, and build on their performance from one debate to the next.
The adjudicators showed their great breadth of experience in national and international intervarsity tournaments - including the Intervarsity World Championships - in the way they supported and encouraged the teams.
Our teams certainly benefited from the day, growing in their confidence and presentations.
Stephen Babbage, Head of Middle School, commented: “These students have competed against some very prestigious schools in Sydney and can hold their heads up high for their excellent skill in the debating arena in both prepared and impromptu debates.”
It was an outstanding day for the debaters who showed that in debating they can compete and beat the best. Indeed, the students have shown themselves and others that we ‘Strive for Excellence’.
