“Released into Freedom” was the theme of Empowering Girls 09, which was held last Friday at Metford Community Baptist Church. Around 370 girls from all over the Hunter, Central Coast and Lower North Coast gathered for a day of fellowship, fun and challenge. We were delighted this year to welcome girls from the DALE school and the Young Mothers’ Program for their first experience of Empowering Girls.

The organisers of the event were a team of staff members from several local schools, chaired by an ex-student of SPCC Waratah – Caitlin West. It was fantastic to see how ex-students were also involved in producing the event and we would like to thank them, including…

Kristie Lichfield – graphics and production
James Adamthwaite and Erin Koedam – sound and production
Libby Townsend, Rachael Schaeffer, Brittany West, Amy Ridley – singers/band
Skye West – musical director and panel member
Caleb Irwin and Brad Allen (ex-Port Stephens student) – video and DVD/CD production
Ryan Stig – gathered together a group of Christians who play for the Knights and brought them along to the “panel” discussion
Nathan Errington – Empowering Executive Producer
Matt Hampton – production and general assistant
Chelsea Rule – Compassion representative and panel member

To the huge team of parents and friends which cooked, set up, ran the canteen etc a big THANKYOU. Our thanks go especially to Megan Connell, our very own “Master Chef”, who gathered a great team of caterers to provide a brilliant menu for the girls, and to Karen Durbin who sponsored, ran an elective and provided a jewellery stall for the girls. Thanks also to Bob Miggins who faithfully supports these events from “behind the scenes”.

Our students not only benefited by listening to the brilliant speakers and taking part in the beautiful praise and worship, but many also served at the conference – offering hospitality to speakers, running backstage operations, organising registration, running parts of the program, operating stalls, sharing testimonies, helping with follow-up etc. They gained valuable ministry experience and learned to work as a team to run the event.

Many of our girls were strengthened in their Christian faith and several made a Christian commitment. They were all presented with positive, life giving messages about their own value and worth as human beings and the beauty which lies within each one of them – a vital message in today’s society – which tends to glamorise and sexualise womanhood at the expense of character and inner beauty.

2010 marks our tenth year of the Empowering conferences so watch out for something even more special next year!
