AIM Mission Awareness Trip to Gilgandra and Moree 2008Tuesday 7th April 2009 In November of 2008 St Philips Christian College Port Stephens embarked on their first mission awareness trip. A group of students from Year 8 to year 10 were involved in a week of ministry in the communities of Moree and Gilgandra. Teaching staff and one parent were also involved with the leadership of Rob & Jen Alley from the Australian Indigenous Ministries team.
In Moree the team were involved in church, Sunday school and youth group, connecting with the community especially the children in a loving and caring way. We sang and shared at Sunday night church and helped with preparing and serving the evening meal. In the evenings we enjoyed the relaxing effects of the thermal baths as we shared about the events of our time in Moree.
Arriving at Gilgandra our students were able to visit the local primary school where they put on a puppet show, skits and played with the children during their lunch break. At youth group two of our students confidently and boldly shared their testimonies. What they shared had an impact on the youth and the youth leaders who were greatly encouraged by seeing the impact of the Lord in the lives of our students.
The Mission Awareness Trip enabled us all to gain a greater understanding of what missionaries are called to do within indigenous communities. The romantic ideal of a missionary was quickly dispelled and replaced with a very practical and challenging reality of hard work 24hours a day and the total reliance of provisions from our heavenly father. As a team of people we also came to recognise the unique abilities that we all have and how when we work together as a united body in Christ we can effectively love and serve in God’s Kingdom.
